Project Description
Heritage at risk
The site of the fishing station Gufuskálar is located on the northern side of the western tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula in the West of Iceland. It sits at the shore of the Atlantic ocean which causes a major threat to the site. Archaeology is abundant at Gufuskálar with two main mounds made up of structures and midden material right by the seafront along with a cleared landing spot. A little further inland are two farm mounds and at least 47 other structures which most likely are fishing booths, þurrabúðs2 and other structures related to the fishing station.
